Post Breast Surgery

Dealing With Post Breast Surgery Discomfort

You went into breast surgery expecting it to hurt a little afterward, but your attention was focused on the eventual outcome not the immediate future. As a result, you just weren’t prepared for how much discomfort you might be experiencing now that your breast enhancement surgery is over. After all, your eyes were on the prize and you only considered just how much better you’d look with enhanced breasts.

Now that you’re home, the discomfort is a little more than you bargained for. What should you do?

A lot will depend on where you are in the healing process and just how intensive your pain is. Remember, some discomfort and even mild to moderate pain is well to be expected in the first few days following breast augmentation. It’s also not uncommon to have some shooting pains that are quite strong, at least in the first day or so. Remember, your body has been surgically altered to enhance its appearance. Some discomfort should be counted on at this point.

To determine the best course of action on how to deal with your discomfort, try to take a deep breath and consider where you are in the healing process. If you’re in the first few days, especially the first day, after surgery, see if the painkillers the doctor prescribed you take the edge off. If the pain is too much even with the medications, or there are other symptoms present, such as fever, call the doctor immediately.

If the discomfort is simply that, try these things to help you ease it a bit:

  • Avoid movement – Try to limit how much moving around you do following breast surgery. Moving your arms or trying to lift immediately after this surgery can be a very big mistake. Take it easy and find a comfortable position and try to stay in it for a while. Sleep can be a big help here.
  • Limit all activity – You can expect activity to need to be curtailed for the first few days after surgery. If the bruising and healing causes too much discomfort, limit your activity a little longer.
  • Avoid exercise or stimulation – Keep in mind your breasts will be swollen, may be bruised and highly sensitive to stimulation during the first few weeks after a boob job. While you may be able to return to other activities sooner, heavy exertion should be avoided for at least several weeks. Pay attention to your doctor’s orders on this front.
  • Make sure you have the right bra – If you’re at the stage of recovery where wearing a bra is important, don’t just grab one of your old ones. You will need a properly fit support bra following breast surgery. This will be imperative not only to control discomfort, but also to help you in the healing process.

Some amount of discomfort is expected after breast enhancement surgery. If the discomfort turns out to be pain or there is any sign of infection or worrisome bleeding, do call the doctor. It is always better to err on the side of caution.
