Will Breast Augmentation Surgery Hurt?
It is not at all uncommon for women who are exploring breast augmentation to wonder about how much pain to expect when this procedure is performed. Some think that little or no discomfort will occur. Others fear the procedure will involve a long and arduous recovery.
The reality is a boob job is a surgical procedure that involves creating incisions in the body. Whenever this takes place – for a heart transplant, tonsil removal or breast augmentation – some level of pain is anticipated. How much or how little pain will be involved following breast implant work, however, will depend on the patient and the unique circumstances surrounding the case. It is virtually impossible to predict how a patient will react or how a procedure will go prior to the actual event.
Whilst there are no crystal balls to determine the level of pain to expect following breast implants, there are some signs to watch out for. Some pain in considered quite normal, but there are instances where concern should go along with the discomfort.
Normal Pain Following Breast Enhancement
Since boob jobs do involve the physical altering of the body involving an invasive surgical procedure, a certain degree of discomfort and even pain is anticipated in the hours and days following the operation. Women will be sent home with medications to help them over the initial pain, but can still expect to feel such things as:
- Stretching – Discomfort due to the stretching of tissue by the implant is considered normal and expected.
- Tingling sensations – This is not at all uncommon during the healing period following breast augmentation surgery.
- Bruising – Considering the nature of this surgical procedure, a sensation of bruising and even some swelling are completely normal.
- Shooting pains – Whilst these can be quite uncomfortable, this is not at all a rare occurrence as the breast tissue heals.
- Discomfort at suture sites – As it is with all forms of surgery, some stretching, pulling, pain and even itching are anticipated following breast augmentation.
- Severe pain – Some patients do respond to breast enlargement with severe pain. This is considered normal if it passes.
Signs Of Problems
Whilst discomfort and even severe pain are not out of the question following breast implants, there are some signs to watch for that can signal problems. Post-surgical incidents that can signal cause for alarm include:
- Severe pain that will not go away – If pain persists for a long period of time and it isn’t calmed by painkillers, calling the surgeon is in order.
- Fever – Any time fevers appear after surgery, it is a good idea to see medical advice.
- Unusual discharge or bleeding from the surgical site – Some bleeding and drainage is to be expected, but a profuse amount is not. If bleeding persists or is noticeable, contact the doctor.
Pain following breast augmentation is to be expected. This is a complex surgical procedure that involves physically altering the body. In most cases, pain is mild to moderate. If severe pains persist or there are other signs of concern, do not hesitate to contact a physician.
