What you need to know about breast augmentation

Before undergoing any surgery, you should keep these 3 things in mind

Breast augmentation is one of the most popular cosmetic surgery treatments in the world. Year after year, it ranks in the top three most performed surgeries. And yet, every year we hear horror stories of back alley procedures and bursting breast implants.

Dr Zion Chan and his team have put together this short list of things to be mindful of. It’s by no means a comprehensive list, and is no substitute for advice from a doctor.

3 things to keep in mind

1.      Make sure your surgeon’s qualified

Making sure your surgeon’s qualified sounds like a no-brainer, until you read stories about back alley procedures leaving people either seriously maimed or dead.

If you can’t easily find the surgeon’s credentials on their website or elsewhere online, be wary. The Australian Medical Advertising guidelines stipulate that surgeons must make it easy for prospects to find out how qualified a surgeon is.

Dr Zion Chan is a qualified cosmetic surgeon with a special interest in breast surgery and rhinoplasty.

2.      You need to be healthy to get implants

To have breast augmentation, or most cosmetic body procedures, you need to be in good physical health. If you smoke, are overweight or have a history of breast cancer in your family, breast augmentation is probably not the best idea.

3.      There are risks with surgery

All surgery carries risks. Before you undergo surgery, you will need to provide us with your medical history, what medication you are currently taking and whether or not you’ve had cosmetic surgery before.
